Luis Almagro Lemes was elected Secretary General of the Organization of American States in 2015 under the mandate of “more rights for more people.”
A career diplomat, Mr. Almagro served as Foreign Minister of Uruguay from 2010 to 2015, and was elected to the Senate of Uruguay in 2014. His time at the helm of Uruguayan diplomacy was characterized by human rights activism both at home and abroad, Uruguay’s entry into non-traditional markets, and the strengthening of Uruguay’s image as an increasingly democratic, tolerant, and diverse society.
Mr. Almagro was an active participant in the consolidation of Union of South American Nations and the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States.
Mr. Almagro served as Uruguay’s ambassador to China, after occupying senior diplomatic posts in in Germany and Iran.
In 2014, Foreign Policy magazine named him a “Leading Global Thinker”, one of only 10 decision-makers world-wide to be granted this distinction.
