Shin Dong-Hyuk was born and raised in Political Prison Camp No. 14, North Korea. Having seen and experienced untold horrors, including the execution of his mother and brother, he finally escaped the prison in 2005. He was to become the only person known to have escaped from a 'total control zone' of Camp No. 14 and live to tell the tale. Subsequently, he made his way by foot to South Korea and is now living in Seoul. He recently set up a human rights NGO. Today, he travels the world to advocate for those left behind. His biography was published in a book entitled “Escape from Camp 14”.
