Ren Wanding is a world famous Chinese dissident. Mr. Ren who grew up in Jiangsu Province, and graduated from university in Beijing, was working as a laborer and accountant when he joined the Beijing spring movement in 1978. An organizer of an unofficial group called the League of Human Rights, Mr. Ren became famous after posting a 19-point manifesto that called for free elections and the abolition of corruption and secret police. On April 4, 1979, Mr. Ren was arrested in the presence of foreign journalists as he pasted a poster on Democracy Wall. He was never formally charged or tried for any crime, but for the next four years he was imprisoned in a cell less than 10 feet by 10 feet, sometimes alone, sometimes with up to three other criminals.
In 1989 he was arrested again and convicted of 7 years in Prison for his pro-democracy activities.
He has received many prizes including the "Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights Award".
