Anastasia Zotova married jailed Russian dissident Ildar Dadin in a February 2016 ceremony inside his prison. Her husband is serving a three-year sentence for peacefully protesting Russia’s aggression against Ukraine. Although the protests were legal according to the Constitution of Russia, he was tried under Article 212.1 of the Criminal Code, making Dadin the first person to be convicted and imprisoned under this article. Article 212.1 contradicts the Constitution of Russia and is currently being examined by the Constitutional Court of Russia.
As the courts stall, the situation is becoming dire. Zotova continues to advocate for the release of her husband as frightening reports of torture have surfaced since he was transferred to the Republic of Karelia in August 2016.
